The Peoria Heights High School scholastic bowl team won the Prairieland Conference championship with a 18-3 record. Cuba and Abingdon were second with 13-8 records followed by Lewistown at 12-9, Havana at 11-10, Elmwood at 10-11, Bushnell-Prairie City at 4-17, and Astoria at 3-18. The conference contests were held over seven dates with three quizzes each evening. This is the second year in a row Peoria Heights has won the conference championship.
All conference medallions were awarded to Pat Aylward (12) of Peoria Heights with 69 toss-up questions answered. Erica Hanlin (12) of Elmwood was second with 68. Brian Smith (11) of Lewistown placed third with 61 while Nathan Pauli (11) of Peoria Heights was fourth with 56.
Shaun Lewis (12) answered 20 toss-up questions and Stefanie Karl (11) answered 15 during the conference season. Other Heights students answering included Don DeLong (11), Jeremy Erion (12), Cassie Lively (11), Jeff Chase (9), and Lloyd Jones (12).
Peoria Heights won the varsity competition at its ninth annual Casimir Pulaski Day tournament on Monday, March 3. This is the third year running that the hosts have won the varsity competition. Dunlap was the frosh-soph winner. Other schools participating were Brimfield and Princeville.
Team leader in toss-ups answered is senior Pat Aylward with 177 followed by Nathan Pauli with 109. Both will join the PHHS One Hundred Club whose other members include Caitlin McLaughlin '96 (100), Daniel Walters '96 (367), Drew Stout '94 (252), and Bert Wombacher '91 (104).
Others answering in double figures for the 1996-97 season include Stefanie Karl with 28, Shaun Lewis with 22 and Cassie Lively with 13.
The current team record is 34-17. The last competition will be the Masonic Invitational regional on April 19.
